Traveling with Baby

Traveling with Baby

Traveling is stressful, period. Add a baby or toddler to the mix and it can become overwhelming at any given moment. Whether you’re flying, driving, or cruising, being prepared for the infamous meltdown is a must! We rounded up some of the best tips out there to help make sure your next outing goes a bit smoother.

Know when to hit the road or catch that flight!

Try to plan your traveling around your child’s sleep schedule! If you’re driving, consider leaving in the evening or even driving through the night to help keep things running smooth. This will help your tot maintain a normal sleep schedule and help you stay sane during the ride!

Same thing goes for flying! Try to book a flight that is during your child’s naptime or even a red-eye. Just beware, depending on turbulence and noise, the red-eye plan may backfire on you the next day!

Keep them busy!

Sitting rear facing in the back seat can get pretty boring, pretty fast! Plan some time during the drive to sit in the back with baby. Try to keep them engaged, comfortable, and happy. You can read books or just have some playtime! Interaction is the key to a successful road trip with baby!

When they’re older, whether driving or flying, bring their favorite toys, snacks, movies, whatever you think will keep them happy! You will end up doing whatever it takes to keep them occupied and out of meltdownville. Trying to stay on the ‘healthy snacks and no technology’ route may go out the window while traveling (and that's totally okay!). Break out that usually off limits treat and some screen time and your trip will run a bit smoother! There’s no shame in any parent’s traveling game! Do what you have to do!

Know their limits!

We know you’re on vacation and want to hit every tourist attraction or beach in the area, but it is crucial to know when it's time to call it quits! When they’re tired or hungry, it is game over! If driving, plan some time every few hours to stop and stretch your legs. Even just getting them out of their car seat and into a new environment can make a huge difference!

During your trip, remember that naps are necessary and taking a break may help prevent a tantrum. Going hot and heavy today will make tomorrow torturous. They will be tired, crabby, and not do anything you want them to.

Traveling with a baby or toddler can definitely be a nerve wracking experience. They are sure to keep you on your toes. All that aside, you will cherish these memories with them for the rest of your life! Be prepared, stay calm, and take things as they come!
