A Guide to the STURDY Act in 2024

If you have been in the market for any kind of new furniture lately, you may have stumbled across something called the STURDY Act, but may have no idea what it is or how it impacts your furniture buying. This new legislation is impacting consumers everywhere, especially those who are looking to purchase nursery furniture now and in the future.

What is the STURDY Act?

The STURDY Act, or Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth Act, is a game changer for furniture safety in the United States. In a nutshell, it aims to prevent tip-over accidents, especially those involving young children, by setting stricter stability standards for certain types of furniture.  

But why is this act such a big deal? Well, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, tip-over accidents involving furniture result in thousands of injuries each year, with children being particularly vulnerable. By increasing stability requirements, the STURDY Act aims to significantly reduce the risk of these accidents and keep families safe. The STURDY Act doesn't just stop at dressers. It also paves the way for the development of voluntary stability standards for other types of furniture, such as bookcases, TVs, and entertainment centers. This means that in the future, you can expect even sturdier, more secure furniture options to choose from.

How is Child Craft adhering to these updated safety standards?

Well, there are two ways. Most of our chests and dressers will come with interlocking drawers, which means that you will only be able to have one drawer open at any given time on these products. The other way we are achieving this is by adding a substantial amount of weight into the bottom of some of these products, so they are very unlikely to tip forward. These safety updates are standard on all products produced after September 2023. Also, our products have (and will continue to) come with anti-tip kits as an additional safety precaution.
